How Dominican Mission Alliance serves Consuelo through Healthcare, Education, and Community Sustainability.
In Consuelo, Dominican Republic, DMA’s work is organized around three interconnected impact areas—each addressing a root cause of poverty and each sustained by the generous partnership of donors, volunteers, and short-term mission teams.
Healthcare
Mobile clinics, a primary care clinic build-out, and a four-story hospital under construction are expanding access to medical and dental care for a community where options are severely limited.
Education
From Pre-K childcare to K–12 classrooms built with Compassion International, to a vocational academy founded in 2009—DMA invests in every stage of learning and skill development.
Community Sustainability
Concrete floors, food distribution, and free youth baseball training address the daily realities of families in Consuelo—building dignity, health, and hope from the ground up.
Healthcare
Healthcare services for residents of Consuelo are severely limited due to the lack of available facilities, the costs associated with services, and the fact that all non-citizens are completely ineligible for participation in the government health insurance program. This is especially true in the northern part of Consuelo, which is most distant from the center of town, in a community where private ownership of transportation is rare, and where the majority of the community are non-citizens.
Short-Term Missions Trips usually have a health-care component, where mobile clinics are brought into one or more of the churches or community centers for a number of days. Hundreds of people in the community receive medical and/or dental care that they would not have otherwise been able to access.
Health & Life Primary Care Clinic
Beyond the occasional mobile clinic event, our priority & next step is to build-out Health & Life Primary Care Clinic adjacent to the main church campus in Consuelo. The clinic will be built in a building already owned by the church, open regularly throughout the week, and will provide a much broader range of services than the mobile clinics can offer.
- Total project budget: $150,500
- Current need: $6,000 USD for design, engineering, construction documents, and permitting fees.
Health & Life Medical Center
Construction has already begun on Health & Life Medical Center, a four-story Tier-3 hospital on church property. Fully approved by the Dominican government for participation in the national health care insurance program, the hospital will provide extensive emergency and trauma care, and laboratory, clinical and medical office space. Completion of this project will transform the provision of medical services for over 70,000 people of Consuelo.
- Total construction budget: $3.56 million USD
- Status: All design, engineering, and approvals are completed. Initial phases of construction are complete.
- Current need: $174,800 USD for concrete masonry unit walls and ground floor fill and compaction.
Support the Healthcare Capital Campaign
Education
Two of the local churches have dedicated Pre-K classroom and cafeteria areas dedicated to education and childcare. These facilities employ residents as teachers and childcare workers. During the week, daycare services are offered at very affordable rates, enabling local working mothers a safe and reliable option for childcare.
Through a partnership with Compassion International, the Church, and STM Construction Teams built extensive educational facilities which serve the community from grades K–12. As part of this educational program, local children are provided with extensive classroom resources and nutritional supplementation above and beyond what they receive in government schools.
Restoring Hope Through Skilled Labor
The Dominican Mission Alliance believes empowerment comes from mastering skills and dignified work. In Consuelo, Dominican Republic, economic challenges have left many without employment as traditional industries decline. To address this, The Vocational Academy was founded through Pastor Julio’s vision back in 2009. On workday evenings and on weekends, adult vocational academy programs are conducted in the school classrooms.
Sustainability means building a resilient community where families flourish despite setbacks. The academy offers displaced workers and youth practical training for today’s economy.

Instruction in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry to upgrade local infrastructure.
Culinary Arts & Commercial Baking
A separate culinary vocational training institute has been built which offers regular classes following a government-endorsed agenda. Graduates are often hired immediately and placed in gainful employment at nearby resorts.
Tailoring & Sewing
Craftsmanship training for garment work and entrepreneurship.
Language
English skills are coveted in business because of tourism. Students with English skills have many doors opened for employment to them.

Community Sustainability
DMA’s Community Sustainability programs address the everyday needs of families in Consuelo—replacing dirt floors with concrete, fighting food insecurity, and building up the next generation through sport. Each program is a direct expression of DMA’s belief that every family deserves dignity, health, and hope.
Foundations of Hope
Esperanza means hope—fitting for this ministry. For many Dominican families, transitioning from dirt to concrete floors marks a significant improvement in health and dignity. Our project replaces dirt floors with concrete, directly impacting well-being.
Why it matters: Concrete floors reduce disease by eliminating exposure to parasites and bacteria, keep homes dry during rainy seasons, and improve air quality by removing dust.

The Bread of Life
At DMA, we believe in holistic healing. Our Bread of Life food distribution program addresses food security alongside medical care, inspired by John 6:35. Many communities we serve must choose between medicine and food—by integrating food distribution with healthcare, patients receive both treatment and nourishment.

Our ST Mission Team distributes:
- Nutritional Staples: Non-perishable basics like rice, beans, flour, oil as well as local produce and vegetables.
- Targeted Support: Aid for malnourished children and elderly patients.
- Compassionate Care: Every package is delivered with kindness and support.

Home Plate Baseball Academy
Home Plate Baseball Academy, established in 2017 in Consuelo, Dominican Republic with support from Mt. Sion Church, and Dominican & United States baseball coaches, provides free baseball training to children ages 5–14 at Esperanza Field. The academy focuses on skill development, character building, and ethical values, encouraging leadership and teamwork among participants.
The academy has hosted cross-regional tournaments, including Friendship Tournaments with teams from Loma de Cabrera in 2018 and 2019, strengthening community ties through competitive play. Compassion International has adopted this model, expanding programs across the Dominican Republic. Participants receive equipment, uniforms, and opportunities for organized games.
DMA supports the academy by donating equipment and organizing short-term mission trips that bring volunteers from the U.S. to assist with clinics and tournaments. Volunteers with baseball experience are welcome to coach, support character sessions, and mentor youth during a short-term trip.
DMA seeks American teams (ages 13–17) for Friendship Tournaments.

Mobile Medical Clinics
Bring healing and comfort to communities with limited access to healthcare. Working alongside local healthcare providers, our mobile medical teams set up clinics in underserved areas, offering essential health screenings, consultations, basic treatments, and preventative education. Your presence can provide relief from pain, manage chronic conditions, and offer the compassion of Christ through the ministry of medicine and prayer.
Mobile Dental Clinics
Brighten smiles and improve overall health through our mobile dental clinics. We provide much-needed dental care, including cleanings, fillings, extractions, and oral health education. This crucial service not only alleviates dental pain but also contributes significantly to the well-being and confidence of the individuals we serve.
